A first visit to a golf course can create more questions about clothes than about the swing. Is a polo compulsory? Are leggings acceptable? Do you need golf shoes? The good news is that modern golf is usually less rigid than its reputation — but checking the individual club’s rules remains essential.
Start with the course policy
Dress codes vary. Traditional clubs may require a collared shirt and reject denim, tracksuits or very short shorts. Urban driving ranges are often more relaxed.
If the club website is unclear, call reception. A one-minute question is better than spending the journey wondering whether your outfit will pass the first-tee test.
A polo is the simplest safe choice
The polo remains golf’s most versatile layer. A collar respects traditional expectations while a sports cut allows the torso to rotate. The Capri Polo uses a soft premium fabric and works equally well on the course and at lunch afterwards.
For cooler weather, choose a long-sleeve polo or add a light sweatshirt. Every layer should allow the shoulders to move freely through the swing.

Trousers and shorts: comfortable, not gym-like
Chinos, technical golf trousers, a skort or cleanly cut shorts are reliable options. The men's Merano Technical Pants combine a classic line with functional fabric, while the women's All-in-one Shorts suit warmer rounds.
Shoes: stability before spikes
Clean, supportive sports shoes may be enough for a first lesson if the venue allows them. On a full course, soft-spike or spikeless golf shoes provide better grip on grass. Traditional metal spikes are now uncommon and prohibited at many venues.
Course weather plays by its own rules
A round lasts several hours and conditions can change between the first and final hole. A cap, sunscreen, light rain layer and something warm in the bag can save the day. Avoid heavy pieces that absorb water and restrict movement.
After the round
Some clubs distinguish between course and clubhouse rules. Remove your cap indoors and avoid entering dining spaces in wet or muddy clothing. It is less about fashion than respect for a shared environment.
The best first-round outfit is clean, comfortable and easy to forget once you begin playing. Golf already has enough difficult elements; clothing should not be one of them. Explore the Palmar golf collection.
